About First Day® Complete

First Day® Complete is a course materials fulfillment program that automatically provides all undergraduate students with their required course materials at a low, flat-rate price each semester and ensures students have access to their required course materials before the first day of class. Instead of purchasing required course materials on an individual basis, students will receive all their materials in one convenient package for a flat fee of $345 for full-time and $161 for part-time students, which will be added to their WVU MyAccount.

Physical textbooks will be packaged and provided to students on a rental basis, and digital materials will be delivered directly within eCampus. Health Sciences Center students with digital course materials outside of eCampus will receive a unique access code via email or a paper card (depending on publisher delivery method) to access their digital content.

The First Day Complete program generally provides students with a lower-cost, lower-stress approach to obtaining required textbooks and other course materials. However, if a student finds a more cost-effective route after comparing the cost of the program to the cost of individually purchasing each required book, students may choose to opt out of First Day Complete by a specified date each semester.

  1. Students register for classes and the WVU Bookstore will start preparing their course materials.
  2. Approximately one month before classes begin, students will receive an email from Barnes & Noble College (BNC) to their MIX email. This email will ask them to confirm their course materials and choose how they want them delivered, either for in-store pick-up or direct shipment.
  3. Students will receive another email to their MIX account once their order has been shipped or their materials are ready for pickup.
  4. Digital materials will be delivered within eCampus. Any students with course materials outside of eCampus will receive a unique access code via email or a paper card (depending on publisher delivery method) to access their content.
  5. Because most materials will be provided as rentals, unless otherwise specified, materials must be returned to the WVU Bookstore at the end of the semester.

This program is available to full-time or part-time undergraduate students on the Morgantown, Beckley and Keyser campuses.

Graduate and professional students are not included in this program and are responsible for purchasing their required course materials. High school ACCESS students are also not included in this program.

The program provides all required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes and digital textbooks to undergraduates on a rental basis.

Because First Day® Complete provides materials on a rental basis, students are responsible for purchasing consumable course supplies that cannot be returned and reused, such as lab goggles, dissection kits, molecular model kits, engineering kits or nursing kits.

First Day® Complete is an equitable access program that makes getting textbooks easier for students. Students will receive their textbooks by the first day of class, and they will save an average of 35-50% on the cost of textbooks.

All undergraduate students are automatically enrolled in the First Day® Complete program. When Barnes & Noble begins sending emails before each semester, students only need to select their delivery preference when Barnes & Noble begins sending emails to complete their order and receive their required course materials. Students have the option to opt out of the program each semester.

Any course, whether online or in-person, that an undergraduate is enrolled in is part of First Day® Complete.

No. This program is for undergraduate students only. Graduate and professional students will be responsible for purchasing their required course materials.

Ordering and Payment

The cost of the program for full-time students is a flat rate of $345, and the cost for part-time students is a flat rate of $161. Most materials are provided on a rental basis, unless otherwise specified.

This charge will be included in their WVU MyAccount bill.

If students choose to opt out, they will be responsible for independently purchasing their required course materials through the WVU Bookstore or other sellers.

Students will receive emails from Barnes & Noble College (BNC) reminding them to verify their orders. If they do not opt out, their materials will be held at the WVU Bookstore, and their WVU MyAccount will be charged.

Yes. If a student does not opt out, their course materials will be held at the WVU Bookstore, and their WVU MyAccount will be charged.

If a student adds a class, BNC will email instructions to their MIX account, prompting them to select a delivery preference for required course materials of any new courses added.

If a student drops a class, they should return the materials for that course to the WVU Bookstore. If they drop a class and pick up another course in its place, they must return the materials for the dropped course when they pick up the materials for their newly added course.

Please contact the First Day Complete team by emailing FDC@mail.wvu.edu.

Opting Out of the Program

Yes. Students may opt out of the program during the opt-out period that launches before the semester begins. The opt-out period for the fall 2025 semester is July 11 through August 30 at 11:59 p.m. EST, and the opt-out link will be provided here beginning July 11. By opting out, students will not receive their required materials in a convenient package at a discounted rate, and temporary access to digital content will be removed after the opt-out window closes. Options for purchasing course materials after opting out can be found on the bookstore website.

Before opting out, we encourage students to compare the pricing for individual books and access codes from Barnes and Noble to the First Day® Complete flat fee using the following steps:

On average, the First Day® Complete program provides students with course materials at a savings of 35-50%, but we recognize some students may find a more cost-effective route during some semesters after comparing the cost of the program to the cost of individually purchasing each required book, depending on their individual course load and the materials their professors and instructors are or are not requiring.

Yes, if they opt out for the fall 2025 semester anytime through August 30, 2025. Students will have 48 hours to return their physical textbooks or other course materials after they've opted out. If they don’t return the textbooks, the charge will remain on their WVU MyAccount, and they will be subject to a replacement and non-return processing fee.

After they opt out and return their textbooks, the charge from the program will be removed from their bill.

Yes. Students can change their opt-out status by following the instructions found in their opt-out confirmation email. They must make their final selection by August 30, 2025 at 11:59 pm Eastern.

Undergraduate students who have the First Day Complete charge on their account will need to log in with their WVU username and password to opt out. Graduate students are not eligible for this program and should not see a charge or need to opt out.

If an undergraduate student is logged in through their WVU username and password and is receiving an error message, they should email Barnes & Noble Customer Care.

Yes, each fall and spring semester undergraduate students are automatically enrolled in the program. Those students will need to determine if the program is beneficial to them based on their schedule for the semester. If they want to opt-out, they will need to do so for every fall and spring semester they don't want to participate in the program.

Course Materials

Yes. The program provides them with the option to purchase textbooks at a reduced rate during the return period at the end of the semester.

Normal use of highlighting and writing is permitted. The WVU Bookstore will use the same standards for determining acceptable condition of rental textbooks that it uses for determining the condition of books sold back as used books.

The deadline to return all rental textbooks is the last day of finals. Students will receive email reminders about the rental deadline to their MIX email.

Yes. They are required to return all course materials at the end of the semester. They will be issued the same title for the next semester.

Students may return the course materials on the same terms and timelines currently in place. If they drop a class and enroll in a different class, the WVU Bookstore will "swap" the required textbooks/codes so that they have what they need.

No. All students will have the option to have their course materials sent to their home address or picked up from the WVU Bookstore. Those who choose to ship their materials will be subject to an $8.95 shipping fee to be paid at checkout.

The WVU Bookstore works directly with faculty members, who submit their required course materials for the courses they are facilitating.
