About First Day® Complete

First Day® Complete is a course materials fulfillment program for undergraduate students that lowers the cost of course materials and ensures students have access to their required course materials before the first day of class. Instead of purchasing materials a la carte, students will receive all their materials on a rental basis for a flat fee of $360 for full-time and $168 for part-time students, which will be added to their WVU MyAccount.

Physical textbooks will be conveniently packaged and provided to students on a rental basis, and digital materials will be delivered directly within eCampus. Health Sciences Center students with digital course materials outside of eCampus will receive a unique access code via email or a paper card (depending on publisher delivery method) to access their digital content. Students are automatically enrolled in the program and have the option to opt out by a specified date.

  1. Students register for classes and the WVU Bookstore will start preparing their course materials.
  2. Approximately one month before classes begin, students will receive an email from Barnes & Noble College (BNC) to their MIX email. This email will ask them to confirm their course materials and choose how they want them delivered, either for in-store pickup or direct shipment.
  3. Students will receive another email to their MIX account once their order has been shipped or their materials are ready for pickup.
  4. Digital materials will be delivered within eCampus. Any students with course materials outside of eCampus will receive a unique access code via email or a paper card (depending on publisher delivery method) to access their content.
  5. Because most materials will be provided as rentals, unless otherwise specified, materials must be returned to the WVU Bookstore at the end of the semester.

This program is available to full-time or part-time undergraduate students on the Morgantown, Beckley and Keyser campuses.

Graduate and professional students are not included in this program and are responsible for purchasing their required course materials.

The program provides all required textbooks, lab manuals, access codes and digital textbooks to undergraduates on a rental basis.

Because First Day® Complete provides materials on a rental basis, students are responsible for purchasing consumable course supplies that cannot be returned and reused, such as lab goggles, dissection kits, molecular model kits, engineering kits or nursing kits.

First Day® Complete is an equitable access program that makes getting textbooks easier for students. Students will receive their textbooks by the first day of class, and they will save an average of 35-50% on the cost of textbooks.

All undergraduate students will be automatically enrolled in the First Day® Complete program and have the option to opt out of the program each semester beginning 30 days before the first day of class through August 30.

Any course, whether online or in-person, that an undergraduate is enrolled in is part of First Day® Complete.

No. This program is for undergraduate students only. Graduate and professional students will be responsible for purchasing their required course materials.

Ordering and Payment

The cost of the program for full-time students is a flat rate of $360, and the cost for part-time students is a flat rate of $168. Most materials are provided on a rental basis, unless otherwise specified.

This charge will be included in their WVU MyAccount bill.

If students choose to opt out, they will be responsible for purchasing their required course materials through the WVU Bookstore or other sellers.

Students will receive emails from Barnes & Noble College (BNC) reminding them to verify their orders. If they do not opt out, their materials will be held at the WVU Bookstore, and their WVU MyAccount will be charged.

Yes. If a student does not opt out, their course materials will be held at the WVU Bookstore, and their WVU MyAccount will be charged.

If a student adds a class, BNC will email instructions to their MIX account, prompting them to select a delivery preference for required course materials of any new courses added.

If a student drops a class, they should return the materials for that course to the WVU Bookstore. If they drop a class and pick up another course in its place, they must return the materials for the dropped course when they pick up the materials for their newly added course.

Please contact the First Day Complete team by emailing FDC@mail.wvu.edu.

Opting Out of the Program

Yes. Students can opt out of this program during the opt-out period at the beginning of each major semester (fall, spring and summer). The opt-out period for the fall semester is July 22 through Aug. 30. By opting out, students will not receive their required materials in a convenient package at a discounted rate, and access to digital content will be removed after the opt-out window closes. Options for purchasing course materials after opting out can be found on the bookstore website.

A link to the opt-out page will be provided here on July 22.

There may be semesters when the First Day® Complete flat fee exceeds the retail amount for the cost of students’ books or the program does not benefit them. For example, they may have a course that utilizes no-cost materials or that requires no materials at all, in which case it may be a good idea to opt out of the program for the semester. We recommend that they visit the WVU Bookstore website to search for and review the costs of their required materials as compared to the flat fee of $360 for full-time students or $168 for part-time students before making the decision to opt out.

Yes, if they opt out before August 30. Students will have 48 hours to return their physical textbooks or other course materials after they've opted out. If they don’t return the textbooks, the charge will remain on their WVU MyAccount, and they will be subject to a replacement and non-return processing fee.

After they opt out and return their textbooks, the charge from the program will be removed from their bill.

Yes. Students can change their opt-out status by following the instructions found in their opt-out confirmation email. They must make their final selection prior to August 30.

A link to begin that process will also be available here on July 22.

Course Materials

Yes. The program provides them with the option to purchase textbooks at a reduced rate during the return period at the end of the semester.

Normal use of highlighting and writing is permitted. The WVU Bookstore will use the same standards for determining acceptable condition of rental textbooks that it uses for determining the condition of books sold back as used books.

The deadline to return all rental textbooks is the last day of finals. Students will receive email reminders about the rental deadline to their MIX email.

Yes. They are required to return all course materials at the end of the semester. They will be issued the same title for the next semester.

Students may return the course materials on the same terms and timelines currently in place. If they drop a class and enroll in a different class, the WVU Bookstore will "swap" the required textbooks/codes so that they have what they need.

No. All students will have the option to have their course materials sent to their home address or picked up from the WVU Bookstore. Those who choose to ship their materials will be subject to an $8.95 shipping fee to be paid at checkout.

The WVU Bookstore works directly with faculty members, who submit their required course materials for the courses they are facilitating.
